Description
Castello di Fonterutoli’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is no coincidence one of the benchmarks in its category. Behind this bottle are 40 years of research, over 300 meters of altitude, 120 parcels, 36 Sangiovese biotypes, 18 of which are exclusive, 120 distinct vinifications and ageings, and the blend of 50 wines from the finest parcels. This project is the fruit of a planning that only forward-thinking estates faithfully attached to the terroir dare to implement. The result is in the glass.
Fonterutoli is one of the noble estates in Chianti Classico most steeped in history. The winery is located in the heart of the small village of Fonterutoli, 5 kilometers south of Castellina in Chianti, and has been owned by the Marchesi Mazzei family since 1435, when the granddaughter of Ser Lapo Mazzei—a notable from the Carmignano area and also the first person to use the name Chianti in connection with wine (a white wine in a 1398 document)—married Piero di Agnolo di Fonterutoli.
Another Lapo Mazzei, along with his sons Filippo and Francesco, made Fonterutoli one of the most dynamic wineries in the appellation by the late 2000s, with significant investments in both the vineyards and the winery.
Today, the winery boasts 117 hectares of specialized vineyards divided into five zones located between 220 and 550 meters above sea level, each divided into 120 individual parcels. All of this is in perfect harmony with other, more marginal crops and the woods, an ideal environment for the various types of game that inhabit the area in their natural state.
The grapes from the 120 parcels are hand-picked, vinified, and aged separately in wood, translating the value of diversity into an extraordinary breadth of aromas and complexity.
