Description
Mazzei Badiola is a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione that comes from vineyards overlooking the small Romanesque parish church known as “Badiòla” in the municipality of Radda in Chianti. The vineyards are among the highest in the entire Chianti Classico region and enjoy a particularly cool climate. The nose offers hints of red fruit such as cherry and strawberry. These are followed by notes of almond, thyme, and minerals, while a hint of toasted spices supports the palate. Lively and long-lasting.
Fonterutoli is one of the most historic noble estates in the Chianti Classico region. The estate is located in the center of the small village of Fonterutoli, 5 kilometers south of Castellina in Chianti, and has been owned by the Marquises of Mazzei since 1435, when the niece of Ser Lapo Mazzei —a prominent figure in the Carmignano area and also the first person to use the name “Chianti” in connection with wine (a white wine, according to a document from 1398)—married Piero di Agnolo di Fonterutoli.
Un altro Lapo Mazzei, insieme ai figli Filippo e Francesco, hanno reso a fine anni duemila Fonterutoli una delle aziende più dinamiche della denominazione con importanti investimenti sia in vigna che in cantina.
Today, the winery boasts 117 hectares of specialized vineyards spread across five areas ranging from 220 to 550 meters above sea level, which are in turn divided into 120 individual plots. All of this exists in perfect harmony with other, more marginal crops and with the woods, an ideal environment for the various types of game that inhabit it in their natural state.
The grapes from the 120 plots are hand-harvested, vinified, and aged in wood separately, translating the value of diversity into an extraordinary breadth of aromas and complexity.
