Description
Fonterutoli’s Chianti Classico is the result of a variety of vineyards owned by the Mazzei family in Castellina and Radda in Chianti. This wine has become the benchmark for its category. The characteristics that best describe it are: an elegant body, fruity aromas with hints of spice, and soft, velvety tannins.
Fonterutoli is one of the Chianti Classico estates most steeped in history. The estate is located in the heart of the small hamlet of Fonterutoli—5 kilometers south of Castellina in Chianti—and has been owned by the Marchesi Mazzei family since 1435, when the granddaughter of Ser Lapo Mazzei (a prominent figure from the Carmignano area and the first person to use the name “Chianti” in connection with wine—specifically a white wine, in a document from 1398) married Piero di Agnolo di Fonterutoli.
Another Lapo Mazzei, together with his sons Filippo and Francesco, transformed Fonterutoli into one of the appellation’s most dynamic estates in the late 2000s, making significant investments in both the vineyards and the winery.
Today, the estate boasts 117 hectares of specialized vineyards spread across five zones—situated at altitudes ranging from 220 to 550 meters above sea level—which are further subdivided into 120 individual plots. This landscape exists in perfect harmony with other, more marginal crops and woodlands, creating an ideal habitat for the various types of game that roam the area in the wild.
Grapes from these 120 plots are harvested by hand, then vinified and aged in wood separately, translating the value of diversity into an extraordinary range of aromas and complexity.
