Description
Taurasi “Paterico” | Mazzella
The Taurasi “Paterico” is produced in Paternopoli, in the heart of Irpinia, one of the most important areas for Aglianico thanks to its high elevations, continental climate and soils rich in clay, limestone and volcanic tuff. The vineyards lie between 500 and 700 meters above sea level, in a landscape defined by strong day–night temperature variation, allowing slow and complete ripening while preserving acidity, tension and depth.
The winery of Gian Luca Mazzella represents one of the most personal and uncompromising projects in the new generation of Taurasi producers. After years working as a journalist, wine critic and consultant, Mazzella chose to dedicate himself entirely to Aglianico with a very clear ambition: to show that Taurasi can reach the same level of finesse, complexity and aging potential as the great long-lived wines of Europe.
Work in the vineyard is extremely rigorous: very low yields, full phenolic ripeness, careful vine balance and deep attention to every parcel. The vineyards are planted on poor, mineral-rich soils capable of producing wines with strong salinity and naturally deep structure.
With Paterico, Mazzella is not seeking a powerful or over-extracted Taurasi, but rather a wine able to combine the natural structure of Aglianico with greater precision, energy and elegance. The project was conceived with the ambition of bringing Taurasi “into another dimension,” focusing on tannin refinement, freshness and long-term evolution.
In the cellar, the philosophy follows the same direction: careful vinifications, long macerations and measured aging, always aimed at preserving balance and territorial identity.
On the nose, notes of dark berries, spices, wild herbs and subtle balsamic nuances emerge. On the palate it is deep, energetic and saline, with firm tannins and a long mineral finish.
