Description
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione “Ipsus” – Il Caggio represents the highest and most site-driven expression of Chianti Classico according to the vision of the Marchesi Mazzei family, one of the historic and most influential estates in the region.
The Mazzei family’s presence in Chianti dates back to 1435. Over twenty-five generations, they have developed deep knowledge of Sangiovese and of the diverse pedoclimatic conditions within their estate at Castello di Fonterutoli, in the commune of Castellina in Chianti. The property extends across hundreds of hectares, with vineyards divided into numerous hillside parcels characterized by different elevations, exposures and soil compositions — a key element of the estate’s production philosophy.
Ipsus is born within the Il Caggio vineyard, a specific selection designed to highlight Sangiovese in its purest and most rigorous territorial expression. The project is the result of years of agronomic research and micro-vinifications, including careful massal and clonal selection, aimed at achieving a precise and consistent interpretation of this single site.
The goal is not simply to produce a structured Gran Selezione, but to craft a wine that authentically reflects its origin, with stylistic continuity and depth over time. Vineyard management is meticulous, with controlled yields and constant attention to vine balance. In the cellar, the approach prioritizes precision and respect for the fruit, avoiding excessive extraction or stylistic overstatement.
Ipsus – Il Caggio therefore represents the synthesis of family history, agronomic research and territorial identity. It is a Gran Selezione that interprets Chianti Classico through the lens of a single vineyard, with the ambition of expressing the distinctive character of Sangiovese from Castellina in Chianti in a pure and recognizable way.
