Description
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli is not by chance one of the references of the category. Behind this bottle there are 40 years of research, more than 300 meters of altitude gradient, 120 plots, 36 Sangiovese biotypes of which 18 are exclusive, 120 distinct vinifications and refinements, the assembly of 50 wines from the best plots. A project that is the result of a planning that only far-sighted companies faithfully attached to the territory dare to field. The result is in the glass.
Fonterutoli is one of the noble Chianti Classico estates most steeped in history. The company is in the center of the small village of Fonterutoli 5 kilometers south of Castellina in Chianti and has been owned by the Marquises Mazzei since 1435 when the granddaughter of Ser Lapo Mazzei – a notable from the Carmignano area was also the first person to use the name Chianti in connection with wine (a white wine in a document dated 1398) – married Piero di Agnolo di Fonterutoli.
Another Lapo Mazzei, together with his sons Filippo and Francesco, made Fonterutoli one of the most dynamic companies of the denomination at the end of the 2000s with important investments both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Today the company can count on 117 hectares of specialized vineyards divided into five areas located between 220 and 550 meters above sea level, in turn divided into 120 individual parcels. All in perfect harmony with other more marginal crops and with the woods, an ideal environment for different types of game that populate it in its natural state.
The grapes from the 120 plots are hand-picked, vinified and aged in wood separately, translating the value of diversity into an extraordinary breadth of aromas and complexity.
