Il Pozzone comes from a vineyard planted in the mid-1970s in the hamlet of Piazze, within the municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni, just a few kilometers from Monte Cetona. The name refers to an old well used to collect rainwater, located at the center of the vineyard and historically identifying this small cru of about 0.7 hectares.

The vineyard has a south-east exposure and sits at around 340 meters above sea level, on particularly distinctive soils where clay and silt meet sandier sections. The widespread presence of small fossilized marine shells from the Pliocene period contributes to the wine’s marked mineral and saline character. Despite the warm exposure, the nearby Monte Cetona helps lower evening temperatures, preserving balance and freshness.

The Giacomo Baraldo winery represents one of the most personal and experimental realities of artisanal Tuscany today. Vineyard work is direct and entirely manual, without rigid formulas or declared ideologies: Baraldo himself describes his approach simply as “artisan,” built on vineyard observation, experience and respect for each vintage.

The vinification of Il Pozzone follows the same philosophy: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, partial whole-cluster use and long aging between wood, stainless steel and bottle, always with the goal of preserving territorial clarity and balance.

The result is a Sangiovese with strong identity, where structure, depth and salinity coexist with energy and vibrancy. On the nose, notes of red and dark berries, Mediterranean herbs and subtle sanguine nuances emerge. On the palate it is layered, energetic and saline, with present but integrated tannins and a long, precise finish.
