Description

Gaja’s 2021 Barolo Sperss comes from vineyards in the Marenca–Rivette area, in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba. The land, arranged in an amphitheater-like layout covering an area of 12 hectares, consists of very compact clay-limestone marl; it faces south and southwest and has an average elevation of 370 meters above sea level. The vines have an average age of 50 years.

The winemaking process for Barolo involves fermenting and macerating the grapes for about three weeks, followed by aging in oak for 30 months.

Gaja is one of Italy’s most prestigious wineries. It was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, but it became a star of contemporary winemaking under Angelo Gaja —Giovanni’s great-grandson, who was the first to introduce innovative concepts and technological practices to the Langhe region. Today, Angelo Gaja still owns the winery, although much of the day-to-day management is entrusted to his two daughters. In addition to its Piedmontese estates, Gaja has also expanded into Tuscany in recent years, where it now owns several vineyards in the most renowned areas of Bolgheri and Montalcino.
