Description

Le Pergole Torte 2023 by Montevertine is one of the finest expressions of 100% Sangiovese, and a true benchmark among high-end Tuscan red wines. It is produced in Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, from vineyards located between 400 and 500 meters above sea level. The soils, rich in galestro and alberese, give the wine its signature elegance, depth, and remarkable aging potential.

Montevertine is one of Tuscany’s most iconic estates, renowned for its uncompromising and distinctive philosophy, entirely focused on the pure expression of Sangiovese. Le Pergole Torte is the estate’s flagship wine: a refined, complex, and long-lived Tuscan red, highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

The 2023 vintage was both challenging and selective, marked by severe downy mildew pressure and a warm growing season that significantly reduced yields. These conditions led to a natural selection of the grapes, resulting in a wine that is more concentrated, structured, and intense than Montevertine’s classic style. The result is a deep and powerful Le Pergole Torte 2023, a wine that requires time to fully раскры itself and promises a long evolution in bottle.

This age-worthy wine stands out for its energy, aromatic complexity, and ability to develop beautifully over time, making it ideal both for future drinking and as a wine investment. An essential bottle for those seeking the finest Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti.

Sergio Manetti purchased Montevertine in 1967 as a holiday home for his family. He immediately planted two hectares of vineyards and built a small cellar, initially with the idea of producing wine for family and friends. The first vintage bottled under his supervision was 1971, and it quickly became clear that this was far more than a “wine for friends.” Within a few years, Manetti left his main business to fully dedicate himself to what had become his true passion: wine.

From the beginning, Manetti recognized the extraordinary potential of Sangiovese and devoted all his efforts to it. In 1981, due to the Chianti Classico regulations not allowing wines made entirely from Sangiovese at the time, Montevertine left the consortium and relinquished the appellation. Despite this, Montevertine remains one of the purest and most authentic expressions of the Chianti Classico terroir.

In recent years, Montevertine has undergone a generational transition following the passing of Sergio Manetti, Giulio Gambelli—legendary taster and one of Italy’s greatest Sangiovese experts—and, more recently, Bruno Bini, the longtime cellar master. Today, the estate is run by Martino Manetti, Sergio’s son, together with Paolo Salvi, a student of Gambelli. Together, they faithfully preserve the style and philosophy established by their predecessors.

The estate sits at an altitude of 425 meters above sea level and covers 18 hectares of vineyards, 90% of which are planted with Sangiovese, with the remaining dedicated to Colorino and Canaiolo.

The vineyards are divided into nine separate parcels. The oldest vineyard, planted in 1968, is Pergole Torte itself. After manual harvesting, the grapes ferment in large concrete vats (150 hl) for at least 25 days.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in concrete, after which the wine is transferred to Slavonian oak casks ranging from 5.5 to 18 hectoliters. Finally, Le Pergole Torte is aged for an additional six months in French oak barriques from Allier before bottling.
