Description
Monte Bernardi’s Chianti Classico MB1933 is the latest born of the dynamic company led by the Schmelzer family of Panzano in Chianti. Only 2,800 bottles produced, a sort of anti-Grand Selection disguised as a “base” Chianti Classico from a promiscuous vineyard dating back to 1933, with lots of marl and 20% pietraforte. The cru has been cultivated by the same family since the 1970s. Marcello Bartolini is the person who has taken care of this vineyard for so many years and MB is a tribute to him. Perfumed and deep, it recalls the high drinkability of Reverse gear, but compared to its little brother it has a more complex nose, also highlighting more flesh and refinement on the palate, between very fine tannins and hints of spices and nectarine
The vineyards of Monte Bernardi extend for 15 hectares, with vines that are over 45 years old for a third. The vineyards are located in the southernmost hilly area of Panzano in Chianti, an area which has been recognized as one of the Chianti Classico Grand Crus, and is considered capable of producing wines capable of competing with the best in the world. The vines are planted on a very stony soil made up of schist (Galestro), marl and limestone (Alberese).
The estate was originally purchased in 1988 by Stak & Sharon and the first wine was produced in 1992. The Schmelzer family acquired Monte Bernardi at the end of 2003, immediately investing in both the vineyards and the cellar.
The vineyards are perfectly located – they sit at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, surrounded by forest and enjoy a southern exposure, with the Pesa River flowing a few hundred meters below. These factors contribute to the unique microclimate of Monte Bernardi.
