Description
Massolino’s Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda BLACK LABEL 2016 expresses a vintage that will be revered and celebrated for years
to come.
Trying to describe Vigna Rionda is a challenge. Even if we analyze the morphology, chemistry and physics of the soil in detail, we are still not able to fully understand what makes the wines produced here different from any other Barolo, even from their “brothers” from Serralunga. It is no coincidence that it is one of the most sought after and respected Crus in the area. On this hill something happens …
Vigna Rionda is a Cru located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba at an altitude of about 330 m above sea level. A Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva is reluctant to express itself when young, but as the years go by it gives the most overwhelming sensations. A touch of Langa magic.
The history of the Massolino family and their wine intertwined with the history of Serralunga d’Alba since 1896, when Giovanni founded the company. Giovanni was the first person to bring electricity to the town. An enterprising, tenacious and creative man, he is the progenitor of a family that has made the combination of research and tradition a distinctive trait.
The first Massolino winery was built by Giuseppe, Giovanni’s son, who, together with his sister Angela, extended the company with the purchase of new land and, in 1934, was one of the founders of the Consortium for the Defense of Barolo and Barbaresco . At that time, Joseph had six children. Three of them, Giovanni, Camilla and Renato, followed in their father’s footsteps, expanding the company with the purchase of cru vineyards that are authentic jewels: Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda.
In the 90s, Franco and Roberto, both oenologists, joined the family estate. Their work condenses the experience of an entire family and the ambition of a new generation, determined to make an important contribution to the innovation of oenological and agronomic techniques and to the image of the estate in Italy and abroad.
