Lino Maga Barbacarlo 2021 is a legendary wine that tells the story of a man and a land. Lino Maga, born in 1931, is an iconic figure from the Oltrepò Pavese, a winemaker who dedicated his life to a single vineyard of just 4 hectares, located on the hills of Broni. The history of Barbacarlo begins way back in 1886, when Lino’s great-grandfather purchased this plot. Since then, the Maga family has cultivated these vines with dedication and respect, passing down techniques and knowledge from generation to generation. Lino, in 1968, took the reins of the company, becoming the guardian of this tradition and innovating in the wake of continuity.

The Barbacarlo terroir is unique: the vineyard is located 300 meters above sea level, on steep slopes that reach up to 70% gradient. The soil, rich in calcareous marl and chalk, gives the wine a distinctive minerality. The south-east exposure and the particular microclimate, with strong temperature variations between day and night, contribute to the aromatic complexity of the grapes.

The Barbacarlo 2021 blend reflects the historical composition of the vineyard: mainly Croatina (approximately 85%), with additions of Uva Rara and Ughetta. The vines, some of which are centenary, are trained in Guyot with a density of approximately 5000 plants per hectare. The yield is kept very low, rarely exceeding 30 quintals per hectare. The winemaking follows ancestral methods: manual harvesting in boxes, soft pressing and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats. No sulphites are added and the wine does not undergo clarification or filtration. Aging takes place in oak barrels of various sizes for approximately 20 months.

The result is a wine of extraordinary personality. Barbacarlo 2021 has a deep ruby ​​color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, spices, balsamic notes and hints of undergrowth. In the mouth, it is striking for its powerful but balanced structure, with velvety tannins, a vibrant freshness and a very long persistence.
