Description
Fontodi Terrazze di San Leonino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2022 is made from organic grapes grown on a small plot of land near the tiny chapel of the same name in Panzano’s Conca d’Oro. The finest grapes from 15-year-old vines were set aside to produce this first release of 5,000 bottles. The famous Vigna del Sorbo is not far away, but the Terrazze San Leonino is different: it is crisper, more concentrated, and has a lighter fruit profile. The aroma evokes wild roses and Mediterranean herbs, enhancing the intensity of the flavors. The tannins are soft and smooth.
The Fontodi Winery was purchased by the Manetti family in 1968. Its location—right in the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation, with south-facing vineyards and soils rich in galestro, in the beautiful natural amphitheater known as the Conca d’Oro in Panzano in Chianti, at an elevation of about 400 meters above sea level—is commanding.
The vineyard has been organically managed for many years now; there is even a small herd of Chianina cattle, whose manure serves as the basis for fertilizing the vines. Some old vines from the 1960s and 1970s are still in production, but most have been replaced by high-density vineyards whose plants come from both mass selection and the best clones identified during the Chianti Classico 2000 project.
The relatively new winery is fully equipped and operates using the principles of gravity, which eliminates the need for pumping. Everything has been carefully planned and designed to produce the best possible wines.
