Description
Cascina Fontana Barolo from the municipality of Castiglione Falletto is a tribute to the memory of the Fontana family.
This wine embodies the passion passed down through generations, dating back to the days when the young heir of the family, inspired by the stories of local farmers, dropped out of school at just 17 years old to join the work of his parents and grandfather Saverio. Attracted to the world of wine since his youth, he immersed himself in the activities of the cellar, in the vineyards and in conversations with the farmers who shared their lives lived with humility but enriched by a deep connection with the land.
These moments of exchange and learning allowed him to develop an authentic and unconditional love for the land of Castiglione Falletto, which continues to be reflected in every sip of this prized Barolo.
Mario and Luisa Fontana founded Cascina Fontana in 1995 with four hectares inherited from Mario’s family. Since Mario is a sixth generation winemaker, the decision to continue producing local wines was an easy one. Cascina Fontana is located in Monforte d’Alba in Perno, with vineyards located in Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Sinio. Mario and Luisa are dedicated to the classic grapes of the region: Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera.
Mario’s approach to winemaking and viticulture are traditional and passed down from his grandfather. First, he ensures that the fruit is always harvested at cool temperatures and always by hand. The grapes determine the duration of fermentation and therefore maturation. Dolcetto rests in steel for maturation, while Barbera and Nebbiolo rest in combinations of large barrels and 225-litre barriques for a year. The Nebbiolo passes for two years in Slavonian oak and spends a third year in cement. All wines spend a minimum of six months in the bottle before being released on the market, unfined and unfiltered.
