Description

The Castello di Volpaia Balifico 2021 is one of the most famous crus from the winery of the same name in Radda in Chianti.

The name Balifico comes from the farmhouse adjacent to the vineyard from which this super Tuscan with a gentle soul based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese is born.

The 2021 Castello di Volapaia Balifico is a blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak for 18 months. This sunny Chianti red offers plenty of body and texture. Dense layers of blackberry and currant with a sweet hint of earth and spicy smoke.

Volpaia is a small medieval village situated on a hill just north of Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the border between Florence and Siena and remains today a gem of peace and beauty that enriches the Radda in Chianti area.

The Stianti-Mascheroni family runs the winery, assisted by Lorenzo Regoli and consultant Riccardo Cotarella. Castello di Volpaia is one of the leaders of the Tuscan wine renaissance, thanks in part to the distinctive style of its wines, which owe much to the terroir from which they benefit.

The vineyards enjoy excellent exposure, ranging from southeast to southwest, and—in these years of climate change—benefit from their high elevation: the 46-hectare vineyard is situated between 450 and 600 meters above sea level on the southern hills leading up to the village. The soils are also stony—known as “Macigno del Chianti”—and provide excellent drainage.

The wines are consistent with this scenario: ethereal, with well-defined floral and fruity notes and a mineral vein to refresh the sip.
