Description

The San Leonardo 2018 offers a bouquet that is rich in currants, mint and sage on the nose with a touch of spice. On the palate it is full-bodied with an excellent balance of sober juiciness, well-founded tannins and beautiful freshness. Cuvée of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 10% carmenere.

Located in Vallagrina, an area excavated by the Adige river, San Leonardo enjoys a temperate climate which benefits from the Ora del Garda wind. Once a medieval fiefdom spanning over 740 acres, San Leonardo has been producing wine for centuries. Owned by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family since the mid-18th century, this estate has often been the scene of historic events, from the marriage of Lombard kings to World War I armistice negotiations with Austria.

It is only from the second half of the twentieth century, when the Marquis Carlo took over, that this estate began to take wine production seriously. After a stint working at Tenuta San Guido with the creator of Sassicaia, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, Carlo was inspired to see if the clay-limestone soils of his family estate in Trentino could produce results similar to those achieved by his mentor in Tuscany. In 1978 the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines joined the Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère already planted, and in 1982 the first vintage of the San Leonardo’s flagship was produced, quickly entering the pantheon of Italy’s greatest wines. Today, San Leonardo has around 50 hectares of vineyards planted with international grape varieties that thrive in the various microclimates of the estate. Most of the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, but Carmenere, Cabernet Franc and Merlot also abound. The cultivation is focused on low yields and highly concentrated grapes. The resulting wines have great depth, concentration and an aristocratic finesse that can go toe-to-toe against the best Bordeaux blends in the world.
