Description

San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2020 is a 100% Sangiovese, selected bunch by bunch from the best vineyards, with a yield limited to around 0.8 kg per plant, often harvested beyond the usual levels of ripeness. Fermentation and maceration takes place in concrete tanks enamelled and lasts up to 30-35 days. The maturation takes place in French oak barrels, tonneaux and barriques for 20-22 months and the wine, unfiltered, refines for 18 months in the bottle in our cellars. Most of the vineyards intended for the production of Percarlo are located on soils of Pliocene origin, formed by layers of sand and pebbles (tuff) from 2 to 5 meters deep, beneath which there are clay banks. To a lesser extent they are found on galestro and alberese soils, on the south-west side of the company; the “Corsignano” vineyards, near Monti in Chianti, are located on decidedly more clayey soils. The average altitude is 270 meters above sea level. Despite the diversity between the vintages (an expression of each wine faithful to its terroir), Percarlo shows a continuity of characteristics which gives it its own precise identity. It is a long-aging wine, a strong expression of the soils of San Giusto a Rentennano.

San Giusto a Rentennano, a name of Etruscan origin, overlooks the upper course of the Arbia river in the southern area of the Chianti Classico in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti.

The estate was born as a medieval monastery of Cistercian nuns and was called San Giusto alle Monache (“of the Nuns”).

In 1957 it was inherited by Enrico Martini di Cigala and in 1992 it passed to his children, of whom Francesco, Luca and Elisabetta now manage the property.

The estate extends for 160 hectares, located at an average altitude of 260 meters above sea level. 31 hectares are vineyards, 11 olive groves, 40 woods, 78 in cultivated and grazing land. The soil is composed is rich and composed of different mineral components, sand, clay, lime, alkali, volcanic ash, clay and calcium. The microclimate is characterized by significant differences in day and night temperatures.

All the vineyards enjoy exceptionally favorable exposure. From the oldest vineyards, planted 35-40 years ago, the best clones of Sangiovese and Canaiolo are selected to graft them onto the new vines.
