Description
The Brunello di Montalcino 2016 San Filippo displays an exotic personality with smoked cedar, mahogany, followed by dark fruit, blackberry and plum. The wine ages in large oak barrels for two years. It is a robust and muscular Brunello di Montalcino, with an intensity of body that transcends both the bouquet and the sensation in the mouth. There is a lot in the glass, especially in terms of smoky and spicy notes, a good acidity and tannic texture to frame it all.
San Filippo was born in 1972, but the real story of the estate did not begin until Roberto Giannelli bought the property in 2003. A former real estate agent, Roberto believed that the San Filippo property had not reached the pinnacle of its potential and he was determined to change that. He has refurbished the estate keeping it true to its original charm and tradition. He transformed the winery into a state-of-the-art facility with modern equipment and technologies. He reduced the yields of the vineyards, turned to organic farming practices and minimized the use of new oak to reveal the aromatic personality of Sangiovese Grosso and highlight the character of the terroir.
The estate is located in one of the most beautiful Tuscan countryside, just 2 kilometers from Montalcino, on the wine hills, bordering the historic Biondi Santi estate. The company has about 11 hectares of vineyards planted on predominantly clayey soil. Consequently, his Brunello expresses a greater structure and intensity common to the eastern corner of the Brunello appellation.
San Fillipo has four organic vineyards located in the heart of the appellation: La Storta (north-east facing), Le Raffiche (north facing), Le Lucére (north-east facing) and La Smarrita (south facing) – west facing ). The Le Lucere vineyard is the property’s finest site, consisting of 2 hectares of vineyards 300 meters above sea level.
