Description
Podere Sapaio Volpolo 2023 is a Bolgheri Rosso composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 15% Petit Verdot. The bouquet is clean and direct, revealing notes of violet, iris root, dark cherry, and earthy undertones. On the finish, there are hints of birch wood and cedar. The Volpolo 2023 offers a great quality-to-price ratio.
Podere Sapaio was established in 1999 after Massimo Piccin convinced his family to invest in the prestigious Bolgheri terroir, creating a winery in one of Italy’s most famous wine-growing regions. A native of the Veneto region, Massimo has always had a deep passion for wine and wanted to direct this passion toward his own high-quality winemaking project.
The sea, located less than 10 kilometers away, provides an exceptional climate for grape cultivation and is a defining characteristic of this area. All the vineyards were planted between 2000 and 2005 under the supervision of Carlo Ferrini with a density of about 7500 plants per hectare, using wooden trellises. The vines are trained using the double-cordon method at 45-50 cm from the ground, allowing them to maintain a healthy balance between leaves and fruit.
Respect for the land and a sustainable approach are the two cornerstones of Podere Sapaio’s winemaking philosophy. The work in the vineyard is an expression of an uncompromising harmony between man and nature, and the estate has recently transitioned to organic farming practices. From the harvest to the selection of the bunches, all work is done meticulously by hand. In the cellar, production quality is combined with technical expertise. These techniques are aimed at highlighting the harmonious interplay between nature and human beings.
