Description

The Podere Il Palazzino Argenina Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2020 is an elegant wine that embodies the tradition of Chianti Classico. Originating from vineyards located in Monti in Chianti, this wine is composed of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo, cultivated at an altitude of 310 meters on calcareous soils.

The grapes are hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by a 20-day maceration. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels and old barriques.

With a bright ruby red color, this Chianti Classico offers aromas of red fruits and plum, with a fresh and soft palate, medium body, and a persistent fruity finish. Perfect with pasta dishes with meat sauces, poultry, and aged cheeses.

Production is limited to about 25,000 bottles.

Podere Il Palazzino, owned by the Sderci brothers and now managed by the younger generation – Claudia and Edoardo – is located in Monti in Chianti, 20 km northeast of Siena, in the southern part of Chianti near Gaiole.

The estate is part of a network of farms and country residences built or renovated in the 18th century during the agrarian reform implemented by Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany.

The Sderci family became owners of the estate in the mid-19th century. However, wine production and sales began more recently, in the early 1970s, when Alessandro and Andrea took over management. The first vineyards were planted, replacing the previous system of intercropping vines with olive trees and planting crops in the corridors between rows of trees and vines. As the original cellar was not large enough, a new underground cellar was built under the farm’s garden.

Il Palazzino is a traditional-style estate with a strong organic approach to viticulture, greatly encouraged by the young Claudia and Edoardo. The environmentally friendly practices are meticulous, focusing on cover management, soil management, and yield management. The estate is not only certified organic, but the wines are produced with the utmost respect for the different characteristics of the soils and vineyards and a natural approach to winemaking.

In the cellar, sulfur dioxide is reduced to a minimum, and nothing else is added to the wine. Only indigenous yeasts are responsible for the alcoholic fermentation. No filtration.

The estate’s flagship wine, Chianti Classico Grosso Sanese, began production in 1981 as a “super Tuscan,” but after a few years, it became one of Il Palazzino’s two Chianti Classico wines alongside Chianti Classico Argenina.

The latter comes from the namesake vineyard of about 3 hectares. Over the years, it has demonstrated enviable stylistic continuity. Fresh and pleasant, with that straightforward character that is in the DNA of the best vintage Chianti Classico wines.
