Description
Monte Bernardi Sangio’Chianti Classico is an expression of the soils and microclimate of the selected vineyards in the high hills above Panzano in Chianti, the coveted vineyards of the Sala. In this area there are some of the most sought after vineyards of Panzano, appreciated for the production of wines of perfume and elegance. Michael Schmelzer describes them thus: “Mostly around 15 years old, on old rootstocks, at about 500 meters of altitude with an ideal location. Sangiò is a pleasant wine to drink upon release, but it can also be aged for greater complexity.
The vineyards of Monte Bernardi extend for 15 hectares, with vines that are over 45 years old for a third. The vineyards are located in the southernmost hilly area of Panzano in Chianti, an area which has been recognized as one of the Chianti Classico Grand Crus, and is considered capable of producing wines capable of competing with the best in the world. The vines are planted on a very stony soil made up of schist (Galestro), marl and limestone (Alberese).
The estate was originally purchased in 1988 by Stak & Sharon and the first wine was produced in 1992. The Schmelzer family acquired Monte Bernardi at the end of 2003, immediately investing in both the vineyards and the cellar.
The vineyards are perfectly located – they sit at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, surrounded by forest and enjoy a southern exposure, with the Pesa River flowing a few hundred meters below. These factors contribute to the unique microclimate of Monte Bernardi.
