Description
The vineyards of Monte Bernardi extend for 15 hectares, with one third of which are more than 45 years old. The vineyards are located in the southernmost hilly area of Panzano in Chianti, an area that has been recognized as one of the Chianti Classico Grand Crus, and is considered capable of producing wines that can compete with the best in the world. The vines are planted on a very stony ground consisting of schist (Galestro), marl and limestone (Alberese).
The estate was originally purchased in 1988 by Stak & Sharon and the first wine was produced in 1992. The Schmelzer family acquired Monte Bernardi at the end of 2003 by investing immediately both in the vineyards and in the cellar.
The vineyards are perfectly situated – they are located at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, surrounded by forests and enjoying a southern exposure, with the river Pesa flowing a few hundred meters below. These factors contribute to the unique microclimate of Monte Bernardi.
The Chianti Classico Riserva Sa’etta is a pure Sangiovese of great complexity and minerality.
Only the best grapes are selected for Sa’etta, a Cru that benefits from the estate’s best terroir. Natural fermentation, in large oak barrels, then the wine remains in wood for at least 24 months, followed by a subsequent refinement in the bottle for another 12 months.
The vineyard from which this wine is born is made up of highly reflective sandstones (Arenaria-Calcare-Pietraforte), rich in quartz inclusions, which give rise to an extraordinary fine and balanced Sangiovese.
