Monte Bernardi Retromarcia 2022

is a Chianti Classico produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes (since 2010). The grapes come from vineyards made up of schist (Galestro) 70%, sandstone (Arenaria-Calcare-Pietraforte) 20%, limestone (Alberese) 10%.

The vinification and maturation are reminiscent of a more traditional Chianti Classico style. The result is a fresh and fruity, medium-bodied, balanced wine with good structure, juicy acidity and a long finish.

Retromarcia means a return to the origins. The goal is to produce intensely typical and expressive wines of the historical area of Tuscany: the Chianti Classico, using only traditional grapes. With the name of Reverse, we want to emphasize the return to the natural elegance and charm of Sangiovese.

The vineyards of Monte Bernardi extend for 15 hectares, with vines that are over 45 years old for a third. The vineyards are located in the southernmost hilly area of ​​Panzano in Chianti, an area which has been recognized as one of the Chianti Classico Grand Crus, and is considered capable of producing wines capable of competing with the best in the world. The vines are planted on a very stony soil made up of schist (Galestro), marl and limestone (Alberese).

The estate was originally purchased in 1988 by Stak & Sharon and the first wine was produced in 1992. The Schmelzer family acquired Monte Bernardi at the end of 2003, immediately investing in both the vineyards and the cellar.

The vineyards are perfectly located – they sit at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, surrounded by forest and enjoy a southern exposure, with the Pesa River flowing a few hundred meters below. These factors contribute to the unique microclimate of Monte Bernardi.
