Description
The Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo Mazzei is a wine with an intense and fruity bouquet. In the mouth it is soft and long. Suitable for grilled and braised meats
The Mazzei family has been linked to Castellina in Chianti since the early 1400s, but at the same time, over the course of the century, it has had an important political and cultural role for Tuscany in general.
One of the family’s ancestors, Ser Lapo Mazzei, is considered the author of the first official document mentioning “Chianti wine” (December 16, 1398). Years later, Philip Mazzei, oenologist, political thinker and friend of Thomas Jefferson, is proven to have influenced another historical document with his writings, the United States of America Declaration of Independence.
Located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico, the Castello di Fonterutoli has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435. It still retains its original form, that of a quiet countryside village: a group of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built in the late 1500s where the medieval castle once stood.
Today the estate boasts a total area of 650 hectares, of which 117 are dedicated to specialized vineyards, divided into five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio, located between 230-500 meters above sea level with a south – exposure to the south-west, ideal for the perfect ripening of the grapes.
The vineyards are mostly planted with Sangiovese (36 carefully selected clones that are best suited to the four production areas: Fonterutoli and Badiola, the higher areas, with clones that give aromas and elegance and the lower areas, Siepi and Belvedere, with clones that provide structure, intensity and longevity).
