Beloved by international collectors and wine connoisseurs around the world, Masseto consistently receives the highest accolades from the world’s most prestigious wine critics. It is the benchmark for fine Italian wine, consistently demonstrating elegance, balance and excellent aging potential.
Masseto’s history dates back to the early 1980s, when acclaimed Russian-American winemaker André Thcelicheff, the estate’s first consultant, suggested that the Masseto hillside terroir, with its unique gray and blue clay, would be particularly suited to planting of Merlot. The name Masseto, in fact, derives from the presence of clay boulders on the hill, as hard as rock: “masso” in Italian means “rock” or “boulder”.
The vineyard was planted on the Masseto hill because it had all the characteristics necessary to give life to an exceptional wine, and all those who become part of the company team, which has evolved over the years, have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of excellence . The Masseto winemakers literally live with the vines, which they take care of practically all year round. They have a deep understanding of the differences between the many plots that make up the Masseto vineyard mosaic, and as harvest approaches, the team repeatedly tastes the grapes to follow their evolution and arrive at a tailored decision on the best time to start to collect in a certain plot. As estate director and winemaker Axel Heinz states, “The rule is very simple: the palate always has the last word!”
Masseto is also an important ambassador for the Bolgheri region, near the Tuscan coast, where the company is located: it is thanks to wines like Masseto that Bolgheri is gaining international recognition as one of the world’s great wine regions.
