Description

Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Riserva Monfortino is among the most sought after and celebrated wines in the world. In years of exceptional quality, a selection is made while the Nebbiolo grapes are still in the vineyard and the best are reserved to become Monfortino. The two Barolos are fermented identically, except that no temperature control is used for Monfortino. The wines are then collected in their respective barrels for the elevation. The Barolo “Francia” is bottled after about four years in wood, and the Monfortino after about seven years.

Cantine Giacomo Conterno is one of the biggest names in all of Piedmont. The estate was founded in 1908 when Giacomo’s father, Giovanni Conterno, started a tavern in the town of San Giuseppe. Giovanni made Barolo from purchased grapes and sold what was not necessary for the tavern, as was customary throughout the region at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Riserva Barolo Monfortino, was bottled for the first time in 1920 produced by Giovanni and his son Giacomo on their return from the war. The myth began like this.
