Description

The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione “Pecchia” 2021 from Gagliole is one of the purest and most refined expressions of Sangiovese from the Panzano area. Produced only in the finest vintages, it originates from vineyards located at around 500 meters above sea level, along the northwestern ridge of the famed Conca d’Oro of Panzano. The soil here is composed exclusively of pietraforte, a calcareous sandstone unique to the region—poor, well-draining, and mineral-rich—giving the wine exceptional structure and precision.

The Gagliole estate, owned by the Bär-Bettschart family, has revived this historic terroir through organic viticulture, low yields, and a focused, respectful approach to winemaking that highlights the identity of the Sangiovese grape. “Pecchia” is fermented and aged in French oak barriques for about 18 months, followed by an additional year of bottle aging before release.

On the nose, this Gran Selezione opens with remarkable finesse: ripe red fruit, black cherry, subtle spice, and a delicate smoky-balsamic undertone that adds depth and intrigue. The palate is powerful yet composed, with dense texture, firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, lingering finish marked by minerality and salinity—clear reflections of its unique terroir.
