Description
Federico Curtaz Purgatorio Etna Rosso 2020 comes from a district called Purgatorio, on the southern slopes of Etna. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Federico Curtaz Purgatorio Etna Rosso is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese that comes from an old vineyard 600 meters above sea level on sandy and volcanic soils. It is a robust and well concentrated wine, but still fine and elegant. On the nose notes of dark berries and balsamic herbs. In the mouth it is mineral and flowing.
Federico Curtaz was born in Val d’Aosta but lived most of his life in Piedmont where his mother’s family had a farm with livestock and vineyards. He graduated as an agronomist in Asti where he later taught. In 1983 he met Angelo Gaja with whom he collaborated for 15 years as an agronomist. After various consultancy assignments around the world, he falls in love with Sicily and its history, culture and wines. He has started a joint project with a new winery on Etna, where a real renaissance has just begun. In 2015, he separated from the project to start his own namesake winery. Leases and manages 3 separate small vineyards, near Noto for its Nero d’Avola grapes; on the eastern slopes of Etna, near Milo, for its Carricante grapes and on the southern slopes, near Biancavilla for its Nerello Mascalese. 2015 was the first vintage. The production is tiny and today is around 10,000 bottles.
