The Rosso di Montalcino 2019 Cerbaiona is a beautiful wine that could certainly rival the Brunello of some of the best estates in the appellation. This is particularly true in the case of this vintage that performs from all points of view. Rosso di Montalcino 2019 Cerbaiona is a fresh and direct wine that offers impressive complexity and depth. Young, crunchy and complex fruit, this wine embodies the true philosophy of Rosso di Montalcino more than many of its peers.

Diego Molinari, founder of Cerbaiona, was retired from his career as an Alitalia commercial pilot at the age of 46. He and his wife, Nora, began looking to the vineyards in 1977 with the dream of embarking on a new phase of life as winemakers, eventually falling in love with the Cerbaiona estate. La Cerbaiona is located in the central part of the Montalcino appellation, which represents the balance between the characteristics of the ripe fruits of the southern area of ​​Montalcino and the fresher and more structured reds of the north.

Eager to maintain the winemaking traditions of Brunello di Montalcino, Diego consulted with the best estates in the region, particularly Biondi-Santi, but also with the small winemakers surrounding his new estate. Locals have always honored the historic and ideal setting of Cerbaiona’s winemaking past and in 1978 local winemakers were hired to replant and expand the estate’s vineyards. Commercial production began in 1981 and the following vintage established the wine as distinctly different from other Brunellos. 1982 marked Cerbaiona worthy of a unique status as a small, but remarkable, vineyard and estate within the wider region.

1.6ha of Sangiovese from the estate produced 6,000-7,500 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino per year. 4.5k bottles of Rosso di Montalcino harvested from about 0.6ha, and the rest of the total 3 hectares is dedicated to the Toscana IGT release. 2015 marked a real moment of growth when Cerbaiona handed over its hands to a new group of investors.

Cerbaiona has come under the guidance of the wine collector and venture capitalist, Gary Rieschel, and of the partner and director of Cerbaiona, Matthew Fioretti. In addition, the owner of La Serena, Andrea Mantengoli, who has been instrumental in Cerbaiona since the 1980s, has taken on an active board member and shareholder role. This new leadership has brought Ruggero Mazzilli as a specialist in viticulture and Paolo Caciorgna as an oenological consultant.
