Description

Sangioveto Grosso, obtained from the “Scanni” vineyard, testifies to the revolutionary tension that has marked the history of Castello di Monsanto from the very beginning. The vineyard was planted entirely with Sangiovese in 1968 and saw its first harvest in 1974, in derogation and opposition to the disciplinary of the Chianti Classico appellation which did not provide for the creation of vineyards with different ampelography from the historical recipe of 1800. Always packaged in Borgognotta bottle , to underline its role as a dissident, over the years it has remained a wine with a Typical Geographical Indication, of pure persuasiveness and silkiness in its youth and of powerful resistance over the years.

Castello di Monsanto is a beautiful estate in Barberino Val d’Elsa, owned by the Bianchi family since 1962. The Castello di Monsanto estate has 206 hectares, more than half of which are wooded. The olive groves occupy another 15 hectares. The estate vineyards, located at an altitude between 250 and 310 meters, extend for 72 hectares planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Monsanto Castle is also famous for its vaulted aging cellar. This spectacular “tunnel” has a length of 300 meters where the barrels are kept. What is in effect a gallery, connects the new cellar with the original cellar, which is located just below the castle and dates back to 1740.

The Chianti Classico are of classic matrix and able to withstand time in an amazing way. Surely a company to be considered among the bulwarks of the denomination.
