Description

The name Quarz del Sauvignon Blanc from Cantina Terlano indicates the particular geological conformation of the land where the Sauvignon Blanc vines are found. The vineyards of Terlano extend from the rolling hills of the valley floor to the steep slopes of the mountains with their extreme cultivation conditions. Here the earth is endowed with rich deposits of mineral crystals known to geologists as quartz porphyries. The distinct character, extraordinary depth and extraordinary longevity of this Sauvignon is largely attributable to the mineral-rich soil. 60% of the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and 40% in tonneaux. The wine ages on the lees for 8 months. It does not see any malolactic fermentation.

Of a golden straw colour, the Sauvignon Blanc Quarz of the Terlano Cellar has an extraordinary aroma of hyacinth, freshly chopped aromatic herbs, lemon zest, grapefruit, ginger and wild flower honey. Incisive terroir both on the nose and on the palate, where rich but lively aromas of apricot, quince and grapefruit are enclosed in underlying notes of chalk, petrol and lime. Perfect with spicy seafood dishes, roasted fish in a salt or herb crust, poached salmon, ginger dishes, goat cheese and peas or fresh asparagus.

Founded in 1893, Cantina Terlano has become one of the leading winegrowers’ cooperatives in South Tyrol, in northeastern Italy. Located in the Dolomites, at the foot of the Alps, Terlano’s distinctive position and extraordinary terroir are fundamental to the development of their splendid wines. Located in a sheltered basin, Terlano enjoys an excellent southern exposure.

The vineyard slopes ranging from 250 to 900 m asl offer ideal conditions for the cultivation of vines, especially Lagrein, a native variety of South Tyrol. The vineyards composed of red rocks with a high mineral content retain the heat of the day, while the porous soil allows water to drain, keeping the soil dry around the roots of the vines. These factors, combined with the cool evening temperatures, give life to wines of incredible depth and potentially ageable.

With a current membership of 143 producers cultivating a total area of 165 hectares, Terlano ensures the highest standards of quality by compensating the growers for the quality of their grapes and not for the quantity. In the vineyards, the emphasis is on yield reduction in favor of more concentrated fruit production. Terlano produces 30% of red wines and 70% of whites, all with DOC quality denomination.
