Description
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Canalicchio di Sopra 2016 is an intense and exotic expression of Sangiovese. The nose is seductive with notes of cherry, plum, cinnamon, cloves and finally crushed violets. Pure silk on the palate, 2016 is still just a baby, with the potential for over a decade of evolution. This year’s Riserva is born from the grapes of the Vigna Vecchia Mercatale vineyard within the Canalicchio cru, and spends two extra months in 2,500-liter Slavonian oak barrels before bottling.
Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and now owned by his son Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, Canalicchio di Sopra reflects the history of Montalcino. Located in the northern area of the municipality, Canalicchio’s 60 hectares of land are located at one of the highest altitudes in the area, receiving limited exposure to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea. This position allows the estate to produce exceptional wines in difficult years because, sheltered from Monte Amiata. The special microclimates of Canalicchio protect the vineyards from excessive heat or rain, from hail and generally help the company’s grapes to ripen evenly.
Guided by the past and influenced by the present, Canalicchio di Sopra’s winemaking protocol collects the best of modern and traditional methods to produce an authentic Brunello that is the result of the high altitude of its vineyards and the terroir north of Montalcino.
