Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia 2019 is a wine from a new vineyard planted by Francesco Ripaccioli and the Canalicchio di Sopra team at the conclusion of an ambitious company mapping project. The Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia 2019 draws its complexity from a two-hectare vineyard planted in 1990 with clayey soils rich in mineral components. 4,133 bottles were produced.

What is most surprising is the firmness of the fruit, which slowly crumbles as the wine softens and yields in the glass. Each layer bears berries, black cherries, almonds, lilacs and candied orange peels. At a later stage, black olive, laurel and scorched earth arrive. There are subtle mineral notes, but what La Casaccia 2019 ultimately offers is a uniquely compact and extremely smooth fruit quality.

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti and now owned by his son Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, Canalicchio di Sopra reflects the history of Montalcino. Located in the northern area of the municipality, Canalicchio’s 60 hectares of land are at one of the highest altitudes in the district, receiving limited exposure to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea. This position allows the estate to produce exceptional wines in difficult years because it is sheltered from Mount Amiata. Canalicchio’s special microclimates protect the vineyards from excessive heat or rain, hail, and generally helps the winery’s grapes ripen evenly.

Guided by the past and influenced by the present, Canalicchio di Sopra’s winemaking protocol brings together the best of modern and traditional methods to produce an authentic Brunello that is the product of the high altitude of its vineyards and terroir north of Montalcino.
