Description

The Baricci Brunello di Montalcino 2020 reveals an elegant and complex profile, typical of the Montosoli terroir. Its distinctive minerality, derived from the marly soils, rich in marine fossils, quartz schists, and galestro, is expressed with finesse. On the nose, it opens with notes of ripe red fruit, followed by hints of wild berries, nuances of ash, and delicate sweet spices. Balance and freshness are the salient features of this wine, with a lively acidity that enhances its persistence. The privileged position of Montosoli, on the northern slope of Montalcino, contributes to the wine’s complexity thanks to the significant temperature variations between day and night, which favor a slow and gradual ripening of the grapes.

The founder of Il Colombaio di Montosoli was Nello Baricci born on 21 May 1921, the true patriarch of the denomination. His farm, founded in 1955 – “Colombaio Montosoli” – is located entirely on the Montosoli hill – one of the most prestigious Crus in the northern quadrant of Montalcino. In 1980, Brunello di Montalcino became the first DOCG in Italy and at the time of drafting the official map of the area, Baricci Colombaio Montosoli was in first place among the over 200 producers currently listed numerically. Number one because Nello, of the twenty-six original members, was credited as the Founder of the Brunello di Montalcino Association. Montalcino – and its Brunello – has no formal “Cru” system, but probably, by acclamation, the famous Montosoli vineyard would be Grand Cru. In practice, the entire Brunello denomination covers approximately 2100 hectares, and of this, Montosoli includes 5 hectares, or less than 3% of the entire Brunello denomination.

The entire Baricci Colombaio Montosoli farm and the vineyards are located within Montosoli, in which they have a handful of contiguous vineyards. There is magic in the union between Nello Baricci – the legend – and Montosoli, the vineyard. Rarely do place and individual combine for such quality and history.
