Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Severo 2021 – Lisini
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Severo marks the beginning of a new chapter for Lisini, one of the most historic and respected estates in Sant’Angelo in Colle. Introduced as the family’s new flagship label, this wine is the result of years of research dedicated to isolating the unique characteristics of the estate’s high-altitude vineyards.
The Poggio Severo Terroir
Moving beyond the classic “annata” Brunello, Poggio Severo originates from a specific selection of parcels located at the summit of a hill, over 510 meters above sea level. The 3-hectare vineyard, with south/southwest exposure, benefits from a unique microclimate: constant breezes from the coast and the significant diurnal temperature shifts typical of high altitudes favor a slow, balanced ripening of the Sangiovese grapes. The soil is poor and rich in stones (scheletro), featuring sandstone and clay—a combination that imparts a distinct mineral tension and uncommon finesse to the wine.
Production Philosophy and Aging
The Lisini winery remains steadfastly loyal to the purest Montalcino tradition. The 2021 Poggio Severo followed a rigorous aging process: after fermentation in stainless steel with prolonged maceration, the wine rested for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks. This extended period in large wood allows the Sangiovese to evolve without being overshadowed by oak aromas, preserving the integrity of the fruit and the “verticality” of the terroir. Production is extremely limited, with only a few thousand bottles produced for this inaugural vintage.
Tasting Notes: Elegance and Complexity
-
On the nose: It opens with an austere and elegant bouquet. Sharp notes of crisp red fruits, cherry, and blackberry emerge, giving way to vibrant hints of dark citrus (blood orange), violet, and a refined balsamic finish of menthol and tobacco
-
On the palate: The entry is deep and enveloping. The structure is commanding yet supported by a silky tannic texture and a vibrant acidity that keeps the sip dynamic. The finish is remarkably long, savory, and characterized by a mineral persistence reminiscent of sun-drenched stone.
