Description

Nebbiolo from the “Gallina” cru is said to be one of the roundest and most enjoyable Barbaresco wines in Neive. In the hands of the Busso family, “Gallina” takes on silky curves and offers hints of ripe fruit and rose petals. A bottle that is beautiful from the start and will age gracefully in a cool cellar.

Piero Busso’s family estate is a prominent name in Barbaresco for its ability to tell the natural elegance of Nebbiolo di Neive.

Piero Busso’s father planted the Nebbiolo vines by hand in 1948 that today surround the family’s house and cellar in the “Albesani” cru. Now Piero’s son, Pierguido and his daughter, Emanuela, work side by side with their father and mother, Lucia, in the artisanal processing of the family wines.

Three of the estate’s four crus – Albesani, Mondino and Gallina – are located in Neive, where the highest vineyards in Barbaresco are located. The fourth, San Stunet, is located in Treiso, at the southern end of the appellation.

What is striking when tasting these wines is not a “house style” but a symphony of unique flavors and textures typical of each vineyard.

The vineyards are treated according to organic principles and the estate will be officially certified starting from the 2019 harvest. Most of the work in the fields is done by hand, by Piero Busso and his son Pierguido.

The grapes are harvested in small crates and de-stemmed before fermenting on indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature or in fermenters in wooden barrels, called “teeth”. Macerations are long and slow, for some wines up to 60 days. The wines are aged in large, neutral oak barrels (“barrels”) and bottled unfiltered.
